The tragic plight of trafficked laborers within the facility has recently garnered global attention, with escapees describing to The Guardian the extreme violence, torture, and punishment they endured.

Mateo (not his real name), a Filipino man, was trapped in the KK facility for six months. Last year, he traveled from his hometown to Thailand, hoping to find a legitimate customer service job. Instead, he was smuggled across the border by human traffickers and his passport was taken away. He was forced to message hundreds of middle-aged and elderly Americans (mostly men) daily on social media, building trust and obtaining their WhatsApp numbers to pass on to the next scammer.

If he failed to meet performance targets, Mateo would be subjected to stun guns or harsh physical training in the scorching heat. Escaping the facility was simply impossible. "There were tons of armed guards," Mateo said.
